Halifax, NS - Two young Nova Scotian entrepreneurs have won incredible support for their business ideas. As winners of Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia’s inaugural Hatch competition, they’ve each been awarded prizes of $10,000 courtesy of Revolve – $7,500 in seed funding and $2,500 in branding and marketing services.
Five finalists pitched their businesses on Wednesday, May 24th at Revolve in Bedford, in front of a panel of nine judges. Each had a business plan prepared, and showcased true talent presenting their ideas and fielding difficult questions. After an extensive decision period, the judges selected Cat Adalay and Keegan McGinnis as the winners.
Cat Adalay’s company, Aurea, is creating a system of modular, micro wind turbines to be integrated into the structure of high rise buildings. This innovative use of space to generate green energy presents a great solution to a growing energy problem.
Keegan McGinnis pitched his social enterprise clothing company, My Greatest Play, which sells athletic wear and donates a soccer ball to a child in Gambia for each clothing item sold. A view into the world of child poverty inspired him to help enhance their lives through sport.
The judges were a mix of successful entrepreneurs and marketing experts, passionate about supporting youth and nurturing entrepreneurial spirit in the community. Included in the panel was: Roger King, President of Supplement King; Brendan Wilton, President of Trim; Graham Langill, President of MacFarlands; Glenn Woodford, President of DesignPoint; Kristin Williams, President, Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia; Phil Otto, CEO of Revolve; and Revolve colleagues Matthew Allen, Mike Bardsley and Sam Archibald.
“Hatch brought together some of the brightest youth Nova Scotia has to offer.” says Revolve CEO Phil Otto. “Supporting young entrepreneurs like Keegan and Cat helps secure a positive future for our province and Revolve is proud to be involved. We look forward to helping develop their brands and building lasting companies.”
Revolve donated an additional $10,000 to Junior Achievement to help support the program, bringing their donation to $30,000 to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
“It was incredible to hear such passion from young entrepreneurs,” says Kristin Williams. “The finalists performed phenomenally and we’re excited to be giving such an incredible opportunity to these two young entrepreneurs who have worked very hard to develop a thriving business.”
Cat and Keegan will begin meeting with Revolve to receive valuable branding and marketing advice that will help hatch their ideas.
