Pickford & Black

When Murphy Hospitality Group decided to convert the former waterfront home of Halifax Gahan House into a hip seafood restaurant, they came to Revolve to develop the restaurant brand from the ground up. We started with our proprietary brand DNA approach to develop the heart and soul of a new brand that fits the historic waterfront space, would appeal to nearby office workers and tourists alike, and was different than any other restaurant brand in Halifax.

Understanding the importance of Maritime history to the location, we looked to the past to develop the name. “Pickford & Black” is a nod to the restaurant’s location: the centuries-old property used to house a shipping firm by the same name that was established in 1876.

Next came our design of the brand identity and interior styling. Both took inspiration from Halifax’s nautical past. The logo design is minimalist with a vintage texture that ties back to the brand name’s historical roots. For the interior, elements like rope, an Instagram wall swing, white paneling and rustic woods complements the restaurant’s focal point of a harbour view. The atmosphere of the restaurant is light, bright and contemporary.
